WATTLES ESTATE Community Garden
My neighbor, Michael Kohn and I have our community GARDEN PLOT at Wattles Estate in Hollywood. Built in 1907 as a winter home by wealthy Omaha, Nebraska banker, Gurdon Wattles–it’s now recognized as “the only remaining intact example of the once plentiful Hollywood Estates from the period preceding the film industry.” Wattles Park covers a 4.2 acre area, and houses 172 Garden Plots. We recently planted zucchini, beets, carrots, cucumbers, corn, artichokes, eggplant, strawberries, sunflowers… and milkweed for the Monarch Butterflies!

Before dawn, I departed from my unheated tent cabin in 25 degrees to begin the 14-hour day of a 18-mile r/t trek up 5000 feet, including 1000 carved-stone steps, to the last point…
where I then climbed up a further 400 feet on a 56-degree pitch along the granite rock face by pulling oneself up via the cable line to the top at 9000 feet.
